My name is Susan Hatmaker and I am running for the Clovis Unified School District Board, Area 1. I will work to preserve Clovis Unified’s tradition of academic excellence while ensuring the District is responsive to the needs and concerns of parents, students, teachers, staff, and the community. I bring to this role, the perspective of a Clovis Unified student, a Clovis Unified parent of two, and a community member who is a business professional.
I grew up in Clovis and have resided in this community for 40 years. As a graduate of Clovis High School, I have experienced front row our school district’s pioneering history and tradition of excellence in public education from elementary school through high school. My family represents three generations of Clovis Unified students, beginning with my parents as Clovis High graduates, my brothers, nephews, niece, and now my two sons. After graduating from Clovis High, I attended Fresno State and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration/Accountancy. From there, I earned my juris doctor from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law while my husband of 26 years earned his Master of Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento.
I am running for Trustee in Area 1 because I want to be a champion for all students (and their parents) to achieve their greatest potential throughout their educational experience. I believe that it takes the involvement and commitment of students, teachers, school staff, administrators, parents, Board members, and the community to collectively perpetuate the Clovis Unified history of distinction. I believe in local control and weighing the input of all invested parties as much as possible. For instance, in the area of certain curriculum, the California Education Code reads “Each district board shall provide for substantial teacher involvement in the selection of instructional materials and shall promote the involvement of parents and other members of the community in the selection of instructional materials.” I would encourage each of the stakeholders to actively participate in this process, sharing experience, ideas, and debate, to better our students and our District.
As important as it is to maintain the foundation upon which this district has been built, as a conservative, it is also important to progress with our student’s ever-changing environment and the growth of our District. Our students face many of the same issues we did as children but yet in many ways there are increased challenges. When you or your student has an issue, as your trustee, I will be there to listen and ensure your voice is heard. I will not be complacent nor will I accept complacency. The hard work begins with someone willing to take on tough issues, ask tough questions, and be held accountable for seeing the process through. I believe that I will bring a unique set of skills to the Board to accomplish those goals.
As an attorney, I have extensive experience working with people, businesses, organizations, vendors, employers, employees, and even school districts. I have been to many board meetings and understand not only the rules governing school boards, but also the duties of a trustee to those served. I would like the opportunity to bring this experience and compassion to the board. While I am running against an incumbent of 25 years, it seems timely to have a fresh voice on the board.
Clovis Unified not only provided a great foundation for me, but also for my family. My youngest son attends Buchanan High School and my oldest son graduated from Buchanan High School and is now a junior at U.C. Davis. The reputation of our District is the reason many families, including mine, have moved to Clovis. Important core values have been present from the time my parents attended through today. Those values must be carried on to continue Clovis Unified excellence. I want to serve the mission of CUSD to be a quality educational system providing the resources for all students to reach their full potential in mind, body, and spirit. I feel that I can make a difference for the future.
It is with this mission that I ask for your vote. I will always be your advocate for your concerns and needs. You can reach me on my cell phone (559) 288-2743.
